Easy homemade foot spa – Al-Tahrir News Network

With the advent of summer taking care of your feet becomes essential. Wearing sandals and slippers in the hot season can have its toll on your heels and can leave them dry, rough, sensitive and cracked. Foot problems increase with age as well, due to a drop in skin moisture levels. Expensive salon foot treatment can help you, but you can still find a cure in more natural products, in the comfort of your own home.

Follow these tested steps and get an excellent foot-spa treatment.

Remove any nail polish and clean your feet.

Fill your bathtub or a small basin with hot water (water should be warm enough to place your feet comfortably in it).

Add a few drops of essential oil (your choice), body wash, your favourite bath salts, baking soda or anything else you like. Common ingredients include rosemary, lavender, lemon slices and honey.

There are no hard or fast rules, so feel free to customise the ingredients to your tastes and needs.

Place your feet in the water and soak for 10 to 15 minutes, (take this time to relax).

Remove your feet from the soak and slough off any dead skin using a pumice stone, a sea-salt scrub or your favourite exfoliant.

You can also scrub your feet with a homemade foot scrub. Sugar or salt scrubs work best and should be gently massaged into your skin with circular movements.

Rinse your feet and pat dry with a clean towel.

Take the opportunity to trim your toenails and push back cuticles. Scrape away calluses and give yourself the full spa treatment.

Moisturise your feet with foot lotion.

You can then cover your feet with thick socks for perfect, spa-treated feet.

Extra tips:

Test the water before soaking. It should be not be too hot.

Make sure the basin you use is clean and has not been used for anything that may irritate your skin.

The water level should be sufficient to cover your feet and ankles. Don’t scrub too hard with a foot scrub or you can cause irritation.

For an easy salt scrub, mix one tablespoon sea salt and one tablespoon olive oil.

To prepare sugar scrub, mix three tablespoon brown sugar, two tablespoon finely ground oats, three tablespoon Aloe Vera, one tablespoon honey, one-and-a-half tablespoon lemon juice and half tablespoon olive oil.

Essential oils like peppermint can help relieve aching feet. Lavender is calming, eucalyptus is energising, and chamomile can help cure insomnia.

Customise your foot spa with ingredients and scents you enjoy, and reap the benefits of soft and sweet-smelling feet at a low price.
