Iraqi Muslim shot dead in Dallas while photographing snow for first time

A man who just recently moved to Dallas from Iraq was shot dead as he was taking photos of the first snowfall he had ever seen, police said.

Authorities are investigating the death of Ahmed Al-Jumaili, 36, who was killed in the parking lot of an apartment complex late Wednesday night.

Al-Jumaili only moved to America three weeks ago, according to a fundraising page set up by friends.

The Dallas Police Department said that the shooting took place at 11:40pm when Al-Jumaili and his wife were taking photos of the snow. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Witnesses told police that a group of men randomly started firing a gun and some nearby cars were also hit.

Witnesses said the man was killed when he was with his wife, Zahara, who wears an Islamic head scarf. The couple got married 16 months ago.

Crimestoppers has offered $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

The North Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called on authorities in a statement on Friday to investigate the incident as a hate crime, Press TV reported.

“Because of recent incidents targeting American Muslims, including the murder of three young Muslims in North Carolina, we urge law enforcement authorities to address community concerns about a motive in this case,” said Alia Salem, executive director of the North Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Last month, a gunman shot dead three young American Muslims in North Carolina.
