Police in Cairo arrested three suspects on Thursday for their involvement in the brutal incident of torturing and killing a dog in Cairo’s Shobra’s District.
The suspects were charged with killing a domesticated animal, possession of melee arms, and spreading panic among citizens.
A video of the dog being tortured and killed by a group of people went viral on social media, instigating a major state of resentment among the Egyptian public.
The incident prompted the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) to file an official complaint to authorities, requesting the arrest of those responsible for the incident, in addition to organising several rallies and sit-ins to stop violence against animals.
The video, which TNN will not publish due to its graphic content, shows a group of people stabbing a tied up dog, ripping it into pieces and mutilating its body in front of a group of spectators on Tuesday night.
According to eyewitness testimonies, the dog’s owner was involved in a fight with the suspects, whom later tied the dog and brutally killed it in retribution.
Following the incident, social media users have launched an online petition campaign to garner attention to the incident, urging authorities to bring those responsible for the crime to justice.
The hashtag demanding the arrest of the criminals has topped Twitter in Egypt for the past two days.
The Twitter Hashtag: #كلب_شارع_الاهرام (#Dog_Of_Alahram_Street).
